URI ( Jammu and Kashmir), December 5, 2014 (Agencies)  Three soldiers and two policemen were killed on Friday in an audacious militant attack on an army camp near the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir. Three militants were also killed. An Indian officer has been critically injured, says the army. Heavily armed militants allegedly sneaked across the Line of Control and entered the camp in Uri, a garrison town in Baramullah district, at around 3.30 am. The army said there were two or three militants, and intense firing took place all morning.

Militants allegedly also fired at policemen who rushed to the spot after hearing gunshots. Two policemen were killed instantly. The army says the firing has stopped and a search is on for militants possibly hiding.

The attack indicates an escalation of militant activities near the border the middle of elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Top army officials said ceasefire violations at the border by Pakistani troops provided cover to the terrorists as they crossed over into India.

Jammu and Kashmir is voting over five days spread over a month for its next government. The first two days of polling have seen a heavy turnout. Results will be declared on December 23.
