International Literacy Day being observed today

International Literacy Day is being observed today. The day aims to highlight the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.

8th of September was proclaimed International Literacy Day by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1966.

The first International Literacy Day was celebrated in 1967 and this tradition has been held annually for more than 50 years now.

The theme of International Literacy Day this year is ‘Literacy for a Human-centered Recovery: Narrowing the Digital Divide.’

As per UNESCO, the day this year will explore how literacy can contribute to building a solid foundation for a human-centred recovery, with a special focus on the interplay of literacy and digital skills required by non-literate youth and



adults.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha greeted people on the occasion.

In a message, the Lieutenant Governor said, World Literacy Day reminds us that there are still many people who lack proper education in today’s world, which is driven by Knowledge and Scientific Innovations. He observed that education is the only means that frees us from the darkness of ignorance and barriers of backwardness.

Mr Sinha said, the Jammu and Kashmir government has taken multiple breakthrough initiatives to take the boon of education to the people including those residing in far-flung and remote areas of the Union Territory. He called upon all the educated people of Jammu and Kashmir to spread awareness and put their efforts in making every last person of the Union Territory educated and empowered with knowledge of the modern world.
