It’s not rare that we go back home after a long day at work and decide to order food rather than cooking it ourselves. The first app that comes to our minds when we think about ordering food is Zomato but maybe not anymore after watching the video of a Zomato delivery boy opening packed food, eating it while sitting on his vehicle on the road and then sealing it again before delivering it to the customer.

Yes, this has really happened. The video has gone viral on the internet leaving Gurgaon-based food delivery and restaurant reservation platform Zomato surrounded by controversy as the delivery boy who was eating the customer’s food was wearing Zomato’s t-shirt. In the two-minute video, the delivery boy eats the food, packs it again, seals it with the branding tape and then goes off to deliver it to the customer.

This definitely raised the question of food tampering and left the customers felt cheated. However, Zomato has issued a statement apologising for what happened and ensuring that they will take measures to avoid any tampering of the food. Zomato said, “in our commitment towards mitigating any possibility of tampering with food, Zomato will soon introduce tamper-proof tapes, and other precautionary measures to ensure we safeguard against any chances of tampering of food. Zomato has a zero-tolerance policy for tampering of food.”

The food delivery platform also mentioned in the statement that the video was shot in Madurai. “The person in the video is a delivery partner on our fleet. We have spoken to him at length - and while we understand that this was a human error in judgement, have taken him off the platform,” added the statement.

Zomato also adds that they stand with their hard-working team. “Zomato maintains a zero tolerance policy for tampering of food. This particular incident, while unfortunate, only makes our commitment to fleet training, scheduling and process even stronger. We stand behind our extensive fleet who do the right thing across many hours of the day.”
