Kozhikode: Ashwin Thomas (20) died after a coconut tree fell on his head while he was riding his two-wheeler inside the campus of the state-run Kozhikode Medical College hospital. The uprooted coconut tree fell on his head during heavy rains and windy conditions on Sunday, as reported by the media.

Ashwin worked with a food distribution mobile app firm and lived with his mother who works in the nursing college of the hospital, in the government quarters. Though Ashwin was soon taken to the Medical College hospital immediately after the accident, he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

In a similar incident earlier this week, a 55-year-old woman died, while 2 others were left severely injured after a tree fell on a car in Chennai. Locals said that the ground near the tree was dug for making a stormwater

drain.

However, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) said that no work related to the stormwater drain was done in the last two days. The work was stopped on June 22 and it was ten feet away from the tree, officials from the GCC claimed.

The incident was reported from Chennai's KK Nagar area. The woman was travelling with her sister and driver when the tree fell down.
The deceased, Vani Kabilan, lived in Porur and was the mother of a journalist. She supervised the KK Nagar branch of the Indian Overseas Bank. The accident occurred when the vehicle approached PT Rajan Salai on Lakshmana Swamy Road in KK Nagar.

Police arrived on the scene quickly, found Vani's body, and sent it for an autopsy at the Government Royapettah Hospital. Her sister Ezhilarasi is currently being treated in a private hospital.
