Voting begins for first phase of Panchayat elections in Assam

In Assam, first phase of Panchayat elections has begun. Polling, which started at 7 this morning, will end at 3 PM. In this phase, voting is taking place in 16 districts to elect Anchalik Panchayat members, Zila Parishad members, Gaon Panchayat members and Gaon Panchayat



presidents. 

A total of 43,515 candidates are in the fray in this first phase. Security has been stepped up to ensure peaceful polling. The run-up to the first phase of polling witnessed high-pitch campaigning from all political parties.
