A couple from Polavaram village in Prakasam district was caught by Vijayawada police while coming to their hometown with a newborn baby girl they had purchased illegally, after doctors told them they could not have children.

Konatham Venkata Krishna Reddy, an accountant at a private college, and his wife Shivaparvathi had been unable to conceive and had visited many hospitals seeking treatment. They eventually travelled to an IVF centre in Delhi for tests, where doctors confirmed they would not be able to have children.

It was during the visit that Amreen, a

staff member at the same hospital, approached the couple and offered to sell them a baby. The couple agreed and paid her Rs 6.59 lakh. When Amreen told them a three-day-old baby girl was ready, they travelled to Delhi, took the infant from her, and started to their village.

Amreen's husband, Syed, accompanied them on the journey. After reaching Vijayawada, the couple, along with the infant and Syed, started to Polavaram village when police intercepted them near Rajiv Gandhi Park and arrested all three. The accused were produced before a magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody.
