Union Home Minister Amit Shah lays the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects worth 67378-crore rupees in Chennai this afternoon. Besides, he also dedicates a major reservoir near Chennai to cater to the city’s water requirements.
 
The Chennai Airport and the programme venue of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the city are decked up with artistic patterns of plantain trees to welcome him in a traditional fashion.
 
The major projects he is slated to kick-start today include phase-2 of the 61,843-crore Metro Rail works in Chennai. He launches works for the 1620-crore rupees elevated road project in the arterial Avinashi Road in Coimbatore, the longest ever such project in Tamil



Nadu.
 
The works for the other projects that he rolls out today include Indian Oil’s new terminal and a lube plant, expansions of the Chennai Trade Centre and the Kamarajar Port at Ennore and a new barrage across the River Cauvery in Karur district.
 
He dedicates the Thervoy-Kandigai reservoir in Tiruvallur district, the fifth water body to meet Chennai’s water needs. In the evening, he is scheduled to hold a meeting with the key leaders of the state BJP, aimed at gearing the party to face the state Assembly General Elections that are expected to be held in about six months.

The police in Chennai have made elaborate security arrangements for the minister’s visit.
