A major railway accident was averted near Bhubaneswar on Thursday after two trains reportedly came face-to-face on the same track near the Jharpada bridge area, triggering panic among passengers and local residents.
According to preliminary reports, one train was moving from Bhubaneswar towards Mancheswar, while another was travelling in the opposite direction from Mancheswar towards Bhubaneswar when they allegedly found themselves on the same track.
The situation raised fears of a possible collision. However, timely intervention and coordination by railway personnel helped avert a major mishap, sources
said.
The incident occurred on the busy Jharpada bridge stretch, drawing the attention of commuters and nearby residents. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
Railway authorities have initiated an inquiry to ascertain how the two trains ended up facing each other and whether any signalling, communication, or operational lapse was involved.
An investigation was underway to establish the exact sequence of events and fix responsibility, if any. No official statement from the East Coast Railway (ECoR) had been issued till the filing of this report.
