In Tamil Nadu, thousands of fishermen in Nagapattinam district started indefinite hunger strike last night urging the release of fellow fishermen and their fishing boats from Lankan custody. Protest strike is also continuing in Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Thoothukudi and Kannyakumari districts condemning the attacks by Sri Lankan Navy on Tamil Nadu fishermen.

Fishermen from 54 hamlets of Nagapattinam resorted to indefinite hunger strike condemning the killing of Rameswaram fisherman by Sri Lankan Navy.

Thousands of fishermen and their families held lit candles and sat through the night in protest. The fishermen from six districts are already on strike for the past seven days. The local fishermen urge the central and state governments to take steps to secure the immediate release of fellow fishermen and 128 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka.

Fishermen in Thankachimadom had called off their protest yesterday after assurances from Union ministers Pon Radhakrishnan and Nirmala Seetharaman.
