A young Trinamul Congress councillor from Hooghly in West Bengal rushed to a crematorium to enact his own funeral in a unique form of protest after he was shocked to find his name in the list of dead voters following the release of the SIR draft roll on Tuesday.

The affected voter is Surjya De, TMC councillor of ward no 18 under Dankuni Municipality in the district. In the morning, Mr De, accompanied by his followers, turned up at Kalipur crematorium. Asked about his visit, he said, “I came here,

walking, for my funeral.”

According to the councillor, “I'm a public representative but have been declared dead in the voters' list. If this can happen to a public representative, the Election Commission can delete lakhs of voters’ names from the list easily.”

Blaming Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for the deletion of his name, Mr De added, “When the Election Commission has declared me dead in the voters' list, it should send its officials to conduct my funeral here also.”
