Drawing similarities between the country's economic status and a patient in a critical condition, Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram on Friday said that the Indian economy is in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The former finance minister hit out at the Narendra Modi government, accusing it of mishandling the country's economy.

Chidambaram's comments came days after the Modi government presented the Union Budget 2020-21. Speaking about the Union Budget, the Congress leader said, "This Budget which is like a Bollywood film, bombed on the first day, but no one is talking about it anymore it. India did not deserve such a Budget. India did not deserve such a dire state of economy, but that's what we have got."

The Congress leader's remarks were made at a programme organised by the Congress in Pune, Maharashtra.

"This government is Suit Boot waali Sarkar,

they act only for classes and not for masses as they do not allow money to reach the common people," said the former finance minister.

Taking a dig at the promises made by the Modi-led BJP government, Chidambaram said, "They've stopped saying achhe din ane wale hai (good days are about to come).

"Industries are shutting down, the economy is in shambles and most of the businesses are facing huge losses due to slow down. Unemployment is surging, people are losing their jobs but this government is has denied to accept that it's due to their faulty policies. Event the RBI has said that in 2020-21, we will not see any investments, inflation will still be high and Indian economy won't see any signs recovery," said Chidambaram.

While concluding his speech at the event, the senior Congress leader called NPR a "mischievous exercise" and stated that NRC would disastrous for the country.
