Tamil Nadu Rural Development and Water Resources Minister N. Anand participated in a community valaikappu (baby shower) ceremony for 100 pregnant women on Friday at the Sir Pitti Thyagaraya Hall in T. Nagar, Chennai, organised by the Department of Social Welfare and Women’s Rights and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). The minister adorned the women with bangles, performed the traditional nalangu ritual and presented them with gifts.

Anand said that under the guidance of Chief Minister



C. Joseph Vijay and through the ICDS scheme, traditional baby shower ceremonies were being conducted for 43,700 pregnant women — comprising 100 women from each of the 437 blocks across the state — at a total cost of Rs 1,09,25,000. 

The ceremony is being organised for 800 beneficiaries across eight schemes in the South Chennai district, with 100 beneficiaries participating in each scheme. The inaugural event was held for 100 beneficiaries from the T. Nagar Assembly constituency.
