In yet another action-packed day in CJI UU Lalit’s 74-day tenure, the Supreme Court of India is set to hear 230 PILs on Monday, (September 12).
With the Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit stepping into the third week of his tenure, a bench headed by him would consider 206 PILs, including 185 PILs listed in the batch challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019.
The batch of pleas challenging the CAA aside, the CJI-led bench will also consider cases pertaining to senior designation, implementation of the Domestic Violence Act, Sexual Harassment at Workplace (Prevention & Prohibition) Act 2013 among others.
15 other benches will be considering over 60 cases each.
It has been two weeks since the newly-inducted Chief Justice of India, UU Lalit, took charge as the 49th CJI.
Keeping in line with his assurances of revamping the work of the Supreme Court on the judicial side,
the top court has witnessed important developments and changes in the preceding weeks.
One important change noticed has been the extensive listing of cases, including old matters which haven’t been listed for years.
The CJI has made his intention of clearing the backlog of cases, especially those which haven’t been listed even once, clear during the recent hearings.
"Many cases which haven’t seen the light of the day for the last 15 months or so. We are trying to regulate. The bulk of matters is a lot, we’re trying to first clear that," the CJI had said while hearing the request for an urgent listing of cases.
Even on the first day of CJI Lalit’s tenure, close to 900 cases, including 59 petitions, were listed before 12 benches of the Supreme Court.
It seems like even with short tenure, the CJI is determined to leave a mark, and leave the Apex Court better than he found it.
