Multiple shots were fired at a wedding in Jammu in the presence of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and serving Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, the police said. According to sources, the assailant was immediately overpowered by the security personnel present there and taken into custody by the police later.

The accused has been identified as one Kamal Singh Jamwal, who is involved in the mining industry and is a resident of Jammu itself. While Abdullah escaped unharmed, Choudhary is reported to have sustained a minor splinter injury. Jamwal is being questioned by the police. The motive behind the incident remains

unknown.

CCTV footage from the venue shows the gun being pointed at Abdullah.

Reacting to the incident, Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister and Farooq Abdullah's son, Omar Abdullah, posted on X, "Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within point blank range & discharge a shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot & ensured that the assassination attempt failed. There are more questions than answers at the moment including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM."
