The district administration in Visakhapatnam has intensified the efforts to search for half a dozen fishermen, who went missing in sea on June 1 from the fishing harbour. Seven fishermen from the fishing harbor went fishing in the sea towards Gangavaram port.
While returning from fishing on Saturday, the boat capsized and all of them got stuck in the sea. While the boat driver-cum-owner Kari Chinna escaped unhurt, the rest of them are still missing.
The Coast Guard, Marine Police and Navy personnel are searching for them intensively. The search is being carried out based on the information given by Kari Chinna. Kari Chinna (boat owner), Sithodu, Chinnayya, Appalaraju, Garagayya, Chinna Ammoru from Mukkam village in Bhogapuram mandal of Vizianagaram district, and Bandiyya from Nagamayyapalem in Bheemili mandal have come from their
respective villages in search of employment and are living in Jalaripeta and Jabbarthota in Visakhapatnam old town.
All of them left from Visakhapatnam fishing port on boat number 83 on June 1. While returning, a high wave hit the boat ten nautical miles away from the fishing port at 2 pm on Saturday and it capsized.
Seven of them held on to the capsized boat and waited for help until 9 pm. When the boat they were on finally sank, they tried to swim and float with their lives in their hands.
Meanwhile, the merchant ship Universe Wealth, which was at the port anchorage point, was spotted and the four headed towards it. The ship's crew was able to rescue the boat's owner, Kari Chinna, who had gone nearby. The authorities have launched all possible rescue operations to rescue the missing fishermen.
