Several people were feared trapped under the debris of a five-storey building that collapsed in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Monday afternoon. The police and rescue workers are on the spot and efforts to bring people out of the debris are underway.

The incident took place in the Kajalpur area in Raigad district.

The five-storey building had 41 flats in which 85 people resided.

The reason for the building's collapse is yet to be ascertained. The region has been receiving heavy rainfall for the past few days.

Here's all that has happened:
1. At about 6.50 pm, a five-storey building, Tariq Gardens, collapsed in Kajalpura area of Mahad Tehsil in Raigad district of Maharashtra. About 50 people are feared to be trapped.

2. Confirming the incident, Maharashtra minister Aditi S Tatkare said, "Three floors of a five-storey building collapsed in Mahad of Raigad district.15 people have been rescued.

Maharashtra CMO said, "CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray spoke to MLA Bharat Gogawale and Collector Nidhi Chaudhary to inquire about the building collapse in Mahad. He has assured them that all possible support will be extended for speedy rescue & relief works."

4. NDRF teams moved to the spot with all necessary CSSR equipment, canine squad etc for rescue operations at around 8 pm.

5. Corridors were created by police for ambulances and heavy machinery to reach the spot of the incident.

6. Home Minister Amit Shah took note of Raigad building collapse and said: "The collapse of a building in Raigad, Maharashtra is very tragic. Have spoken to DG NDRF to provide all possible assistance, teams are on the way and will be assisting with the rescue operations as soon as possible. Praying for everyone’s safety," he tweeted.

7. As per latest reports, 16 people are still feared trapped under the debris. Of the rescued people, one person has succumbed to their injuries. Rescue operations are underway.
