The Lok Sabha Secretariat has issued a notice to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi over a breach of privilege complaint filed by BJP MPs.

He has been asked to submit his reply by August 28 over remarks made during a debate on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.

The notice has been issued on behalf of the Lok Sabha Speaker's Secretariat. It comes after several complaints alleged that Rahul Gandhi used unparliamentary language and levelled serious allegations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah without giving the advance notice required under Rule 353 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha.

The breach of privilege notice was submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla by BJP MP Anurag Thakur on July 30, 2026. In his complaint, Thakur alleged that Rahul Gandhi made objectionable remarks against the Home Minister during the debate on the Public Examination (Prevention

of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.

Separately, BJP MP Dr Sanjay Jaiswal had also written to the Speaker on July 29, requesting that cognisance be taken of Rahul Gandhi's alleged use of unparliamentary expressions during the same debate.

Jaiswal urged the Speaker to initiate appropriate action under the Rules of Procedure.

According to sources, the notice issued to Rahul Gandhi requires him to submit his comments or response by August 28, 2026.

Sources further said that once Rahul Gandhi's reply is received, the Speaker's Secretariat will examine its merits before deciding the next course of action.

If the explanation is found satisfactory, the matter may be closed without being referred to the Committee of Privileges.

However, if the response is considered unsatisfactory, the issue could be referred to the Committee of Privileges for further examination.
