Punjab Top Doctor Asked To Lie On Fungus-ridden Hospital Bed Breaks Down

New Delhi: Dr Raj Bahadur, who resigned as vice chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, broke down on Saturday while meeting Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring in Mohali. The top spinal surgeon faced humiliation on Friday, when he was asked by Punjab Health Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra to lie down on a dirty, fungus-infested mattress used for patients.

In video and photos that went viral, Dr Raj Bahadur could be seen lying on the hospital bed on being asked by Jouramajra. While the Health Minister could have been trying to drive home the issue of poor facilities, his method did not go down well with the hospital authorities and the doctors.

Hours later, Dr Bahadur tendered his resignation followed by a slew of resignations by top medical professionals working in government hospitals across Punjab.

Condemning the “misbehaviour”, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded an unconditional apology and resignation from the Minister. “IMA appeals to the Chief Minister of Punjab to immediately intervene and take necessary action against the Minister immediately,” the IMA said.

Dr Akhil Sarin of the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) also called out the “ill-treatment” meted out to the VC by the health minister.
