A Jan Suraaj worker, Dularchand Yadav, was shot dead in Mokama on Thursday during an election campaign, triggering tension days ahead of the Assembly polls in the state. Yadav, who had earlier contested from the Mokama Assembly seat, was campaigning for Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj candidate when the attack took place in Taratar village.

According to police, Yadav was first shot in the leg before being run over by a vehicle. Baadh ADPO Abhishek Singh said the police were "probing all angles" and that action would be taken on every complaint received.

JDU candidate Anant Singh, who was campaigning in the area at the time, alleged that the attack was part of a conspiracy planned by former RJD MP Surajbhan Singh, husband of RJD candidate Veena Devi.

"We were meeting people and asking them to vote for us. On the way, supporters of another candidate started shouting 'Murdabad'. I told my supporters not to respond and moved ahead. Some of my vehicles were behind me. Surajbhan was fully prepared for a clash and his people attacked our vehicles.

Dularchand was the first one to raise his hand. My supporters' vehicles were vandalised," Anant Singh said.
He added, "This entire game is being played by Surajbhan Singh."

Reacting to the incident, Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor said his party leaders were on their way to Mokama.

"We have received information that Dularchand Yadav ji was shot. The public has made up its mind for change, look at the crowds here even in the rain. Fifty lakh youths have returned to their villages with a resolve for change. On the 14th, Bihar will see a new order," Kishor said.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav condemned the violence, saying political parties must maintain peace during the polls.

"There's no need for violence during elections. The code of conduct is in place, yet some people are roaming around with guns and bullets. Dular Chand Yadav was murdered in Mokama. What kind of people have taken over Bihar? The Prime Minister should open his eyes and see the frustration of the people. These are people afraid of defeat," Tejashwi said.
