In a move aimed at preventing drowning deaths, the Visakhapatnam police will soon introduce robotic lifebuoys at city beaches.

A demonstration of the device was inspected by Commissioner of Police Dr Shanka Brata Bagchi along with senior officers at RK Beach near YMCA on Friday evening.

The robotic lifebuoy can be remotely operated and

travel up to 600 metres into the sea to rescue persons in distress.

Police officials said drowning incidents have been reported at 16 locations between Appikonda and Bheemili beaches.

Plans are being finalised to deploy the equipment at all strategic points, where trained lifeguards will operate them to improve beach safety.
