As Nepal crawled back to normalcy after days of violent protests resulted in a change of regime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated the Himalayan nation's interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, saying her reaching the top post was a very good example of women empowerment. The PM also wished Nepal's youngsters a bright future ahead.
Karki, Nepal's former Chief Justice, was officially sworn-in as the interim Prime Minister of the country after she took oath of office on Friday night. Her appointment came four days after her predecessor KP Sharma Oli quit following massive anti-corruption protests against his government. She is the first woman to hold the office of Nepal's prime minister.
"Nepal is a friend of India, a close friend.
Today, on behalf of 140 crore Indians, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Smt. Sushila ji on assuming charge as the Prime Minister of the interim government in Nepal. Sushila ji's taking oath as the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal is a very good example of women's empowerment," PM Modi said while addressing a large gathering in Imphal.
Exuding confidence in Karki's leadership, PM Modi said that she will pave the way for peace, stability and prosperity in Nepal.
The 73-year-old Nepalese leader is widely known for her integrity and strength. During her tenure as Chief Justice between 2016 and 2017, Karki was known for taking a firm stand against corruption. She is seen as a consensus candidate acceptable to both the protest leaders and Nepal’s army.
