Passenger Held at Delhi Airport for Smuggling Gold

Customs officers at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here seized three capsules suspected to contain 744 grams of gold after intercepting a man who came from Jakarta and admitted to having swallowed them. 

The passenger, who arrived here on Monday, was intercepted after crossing the Green Channel on the basis of Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) profiling, according to an official



statement.

The department said an X-ray screening of the passenger's baggage did not reveal any suspicious images. However, as the passenger's behaviour appeared suspicious, officials took him to the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) office for a detailed interrogation. 

"During sustained questioning, the passenger admitted that he had ingested three solid pieces of gold having a total weight of 744 grams," the statement said.
