Mumbai: A four-year-old boy was killed and five persons, including an infant, were injured in a house collapse on Saturday evening at KD compound, behind Shimpoli Tower, in Kandivali West. The structure gave way when a BMC contractor was undertaking road drainage work in front of the single-storeyed house. The fire brigade and the police rushed to the spot.

The deceased child has been identified as Naushad Ali. The injured are three-month-old Dilshad Shah, Hasina Shah, 22, Shahidunissa Rain, 30, Prema Yadav, 38, and Mohmmad Ansar, 16.

Three injured persons were admitted to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital, while two were admitted to the private Trident Hospital. The infant has been admitted to Children’s Hospital in Malad. Their

condition is said to be stable.

Local BJP corporator Kamlesh Yadav told the media that the contractor was digging a pit 10 feet ahead of the house. He said the house collapsed as its construction was substandard.

Yadav added, “The contractor should have taken precautions before digging the pit. This is negligence on his part.”

Assistant municipal commissioner of Kandivali West, Sandhya Nandedkar said, “We will blacklist the contractor and register an FIR against him. We also noticed that there are many illegal houses in the area. The foundation of the house was substandard. Construction of sewage water drainage was underway but the contractor hadn’t dug that much. An inquiry is being conducted.”
