Three people were killed and four others were injured after an elephant rampaged across Gopinathpur village under Nimapara and Pipili block in Puri district, Odisha.

Three of the four are critically injured.

The deceased have been identified as Jugal Kishore Bhatt from Gopinathpur village, Makara Palei from, Chandradeipur Mati Sahi and Chaitan Sahu from Rajatei area.

Bhuban Prusty and Hadibandhu Nayak from Terahal village sustained serious injuries in the attack.

Reportedly, after crossing a highway, the elephant created havoc among residents after it sneaked into human habitations under Balanga police limits in search of food. The elephant even caused crop



damage.

However, the three persons came across the animal following which it attacked them killing them on spot.

After being informed by local's, forest and police officials reached the spot and attempt were made to drive away the elephant.

Puri Sub-Collector of Bhabataran Sahoo confirmed India Today TV about the three deaths and said that forest and police officials are on the field.

"Since it's day time, those elephants will move around the field. We have requested villagers not to tease them and that during night hours, they will move away. We are keeping a close watch on them. Three critically injured have been shifted to a hospital," Bhabataran Sahoo said.
