No special Parliament session planned, says Kiren Rijiju amid women's quota buzz

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday ruled out reports of a special session of Parliament from August 16 to 18 to take up the women's reservation and delimitation bills, saying no such proposal was under consideration. His clarification comes amid speculation that the government could convene a special sitting after Independence Day to push the two key constitutional measures.

"There is no proposal to have any special session from August 16 to 18 on women's reservation and delimitation bills," Rijiju told PTI.

The statement comes even as the government continues consultations during the ongoing Monsoon Session to



build support for the reintroduction of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which seeks to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures from 2029 and redraw Lok Sabha constituencies, increasing their strength to 816.

The renewed push follows an earlier attempt nearly four months ago that failed to secure enough support for passage.

As part of its outreach, Rijiju met Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to discuss the proposed legislation, sources familiar with the developments said.

However, the sources said the minister did not receive any commitment from the Congress leader.
