Nearly 10,000 banana trees were damaged in the rain and whirlwind that lashed the villages around Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district on Sunday night.

Affected villages include Sathanur, Maruvur, Vadugakukdi, Maharajapuram, Valappakudi etc. Farmers said the loss may be to the tune of Rs 50 lakh. Mathiyalagan, a farmer, said the banana bunches were getting ready for sale for Ayudha

Puja.

''The wind damaged them. One bunch will fetch us Rs 600. Now we have to spend Rs 20,000 per acre to remove damaged trees from the field. Already we have spent Rs 2 lakh per acre for cultivation,'' the farmers said.

They appealed to the government to assess the damage through agriculture and horticulture departments and provide relief to banana farmers.
