The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 is expected to be taken up by the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai on Friday, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said the bill seeks to weed out corruption, improve road safety and usher in use of technology to regulate traffic.
Mr Gadkari said the clause regarding education qualification in the Motor Vehicle Act will be removed as it has been experienced that even an illiterate person can become the best driver. The Bill has already been passed by the Lok Sabha.
While attending the India International Bus and Car show,
Prawaas 2019, Mr Gadkari said the government has approved the national permit scheme for inter-state travel for bus operators. The move is likely to increase the state revenue by 3-4 per cent as the money will be directly credited to the states in a proportionate manner.
The minister announced that the government will soon provide the online facility of obtaining a permit for the electric vehicles including buses, car taxis, autos and bike taxis.
Mr Gadkari said that government is working on alternative fuel such as deriving ethanol from sugarcane which will be cost-effective and pollution-free.
