Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up the concerns of Tamil Nadu fishermen during the ongoing three-day visit of the Sri Lankan Prime Minister.
In a letter, Mr Stalin called for an early and lasting resolution to the persistent challenges faced by Indian fishermen in the Palk Bay through sustained diplomatic efforts.
The Chief Minister highlighted that 26 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and 242 fishing boats
continue to be in Sri Lankan custody. He requested the Prime Minister to ensure their prompt repatriation and the release of the seized boats, noting the severe financial impact on affected families.
Mr Stalin also reiterated the demand for the retrieval of Katchatheevu Island and restoration of traditional fishing rights in the Palk Bay. He condemned the frequent violent attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan nationals and called for improved bilateral security coordination and ongoing diplomatic engagement.
