At least three personnel of Pakistan's Sindh Rangers and three militants were killed after heavily armed attackers stormed the paramilitary force's headquarters in Karachi on Saturday, according to local media reports.
The assault began when an explosives-laden vehicle rammed the main gate of the Sindh Rangers facility in the Gulistan-i-Jauhar area, triggering a powerful blast. The attackers then opened fire on security personnel, leading to an intense gun battle.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion followed by sustained gunfire. Police, Rangers and rescue teams rushed to the scene as security forces launched a counter-operation and sealed off the area.
Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho said a mopping-up operation was underway, with Special Security Unit commandos,
the Anti-Terrorist Force and Rangers personnel deployed to secure the compound and surrounding neighbourhood.
According to local media reports, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar (JuA) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying nine of its fighters took part in the assault.
Sources said the first explosion was powerful, followed by two smaller blasts. Gunfire was also reported in the area during the operation.
The attack took place on a major road in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, which connects several universities and leads to Pakistan’s Meteorological Department.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the area following reports of the explosion and firing, Dawn reported. Authorities sealed off the neighbourhood as security forces launched an operation to secure the area.
