A 28-year-old man was arrested by the Pallavaram police for assaulting a 24-year-old woman with a helmet and threatening her with dire consequences after their proposed marriage was called off due to differences between their families.

According to the police, the woman, a resident of Madipakkam, and Mohammed Syed Abubakkar, a resident of Nandambakkam, had been engaged about one-and-a-half years ago. However, the marriage did not take place.

Police said Abubakkar had allegedly been

following the woman and repeatedly pressuring her to marry him. On September 4 afternoon, an argument occurred when the woman was speaking to Abubakkar on Moovarasanpet main road.

During the altercation, Abubakkar allegedly assaulted her with a helmet and threatened her before fleeing. Based on the woman's complaint at the S-9 Palavanthangal police station, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act (TNPHW Act).
