Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Saturday received additional charges as the Governor of Nagaland, following the demise of Nagaland Governor La Ganesan.

The President’s office issued a communique announcing the appointment. "Consequent upon the demise of Shri La Ganesan, Governor of Nagaland, the President of India has appointed Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Governor of Manipur, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Nagaland, in addition to his own duties," the note read.

The vacancy arose after La Ganesan, 80, passed away on Friday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai, a Raj Bhavan official in Kohima said.

Narendra Modi has offered his condolences on the passing of La Ganesan. In a post on X, PM Modi called him a devout nationalist and a pillar of the party who helped in the expansion of BJP across Tamil Nadu. He also remembered Ganesan as someone who was deeply passionate about Tamil culture.

"Pained by the passing of Nagaland Governor Thiru La. Ganesan Ji. He will be remembered as a devout nationalist, who dedicated his life to service and nation-building," wrote PM Modi on X.

Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai also expressed grief on the passing away of La Ganesan. Terming his death as a great loss to the Tamil Community, Annamalai offered his condolences to the members of his family.
