The ruling Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena and the NCP recorded a resounding victory in elections to 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, securing 207 posts of municipal presidents on Sunday and leaving the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) reeling with just 44.
While the results meant that the Mahayuti alliance was firmly holding sway in the state following last year's Assembly polls, the opposition MVA bloc fell short of winning the people's trust yet again.
Final results released by the State Election Commission (SEC) late Sunday night showed the BJP emerging as the single-largest winner with 117 municipal president posts, followed by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena with 53 and the NCP with 37.
The NCP, a constituent of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, had contested 80 seats for municipal council presidents and won 37.
Hours before the final results were announced
and trends were strongly favouring Mahayuti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the BJP-led bloc and also expressed gratitude towards the voters, saying they firmly stood with development.
In a post on X, PM Modi said he was indebted to the people of Maharashtra for reposing their trust in the BJP and the Mahayuti, calling the verdict a clear endorsement of people-centric development politics.
"Maharashtra stands firmly behind development! I am indebted to the people of Maharashtra for showing trust in the BJP and the Mahayuti in the municipal council and municipal corporation elections. This is a reflection of the trust the people have shown in our people-centric development approach," the PM posted on X.
He added that the government would work with renewed energy to fulfil the aspirations of every citizen and commended BJP and Mahayuti workers for their efforts at the grassroots level.
