The Madras High Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking an inquiry into actor and TVK chief Vijay over his election affidavit, in which he stated that he had lent Rs 12.60 crore to his wife.
The order came in a case filed by Venkatesh, a voter from the Perambur constituency. The petitioner claimed that Sangeetha Vijay had filed for divorce from Vijay, raising doubts about the declaration in the nomination papers.
He argued that disclosure of assets
in an election affidavit is not a mere formality and that suppressing facts would amount to cheating the electoral process. He also questioned the lack of explanation regarding Rs 20 crore reportedly given to a private educational trust.
Hearing the matter, a bench comprising Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arulmurugan noted that a similar petition seeking the same relief had already been dismissed earlier and therefore could not be entertained again.
