A chemistry lecturer at a private junior college in the city was arrested on Friday for allegedly extorting gold jewellery worth Rs 9 lakh from a student in exchange for higher marks. 

Markapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police U. Nagaraju disclosed the case details at a press conference. The accused, Kunduru Ramanjaneya Reddy, a native of Gollapalli in Tarlupadu Mandal, was working at a private college in Markapuram. 

According to police, Reddy was addicted to vices and was in debt. From January, he noticed the victim wearing



gold jewellery to college. Telling her she was scoring low in exams, he offered to give her higher marks if she gave him the jewellery. 

Over time, he took gold ornaments worth Rs 9 lakh from her. The girl?s parents noticed the missing jewellery. When questioned, she initially gave evasive replies, claiming she had lent it to friends. 

She later confessed and revealed the lecturer?s actions. Following a complaint from the parents, police registered a case, arrested the accused, and recovered the gold jewellery from him.
