Keralam Village Creates Gigantic Pookkalam in Memory of Jumbo

The entire village of Irulam came together to create a massive 25,000-square-foot Pookkalam as part of Onam celebrations, with the floral artwork also paying tribute to a beloved wild elephant named Maniyan.

The floral carpet was created at the Irulam Higher Secondary School ground using more than 10,000 kg of flowers, including marigolds, locally known as Chendumalli, and globe



amaranths, or Vadamalli.

The centrepiece of the Pookkalam is a large floral depiction of Maniyan, a peace-loving wild tusker, who was known for his friendliness with the people in the village, that remains deeply etched in the memories of the local community. 

The floral sculpture was created as a tribute to the elephant, which was dearly loved by villagers.
