The free bus travel for women in State run buses under ‘Shakti’ scheme on Monday touched 500 crore rides by women under the scheme and the transport department officials termed it “a historical record in public transport.” The total ticket value of women travellers under the scheme has amounted to Rs 12,669 crore so far.

The scheme was launched by the ruling Congress government in Karnataka on June 11, 2023 and women across the State travel for free in buses run by Karnataka State Road Transport



Corporation (KSRTC), North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC).

To mark the occasion, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister of Transport Ramalinga Reddy symbolically presented 500th ride ticket to a woman passenger, gifted her a shawl and a memento while 30 women passengers including students, senior citizens and transgender individuals were felicitated with Ilkal sarees, sweets and roses.
