Koppal: Mining baron G. Janardhan Reddy, Karnataka legislator from Gangawati constituency in Koppal district, has been disqualified from the Assembly following his conviction by a CBI special court in Hyderabad in the Obulapuram mining scam for a period exceeding two years. Reddy had won the 2023 election on a Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha (KRPP) ticket, a party he founded in December 2022. In March 2024, he merged it with the BJP, formally rejoining the party after over a decade.
On May 6, 2025, a special CBI court in Hyderabad convicted Reddy and three others in the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) illegal mining
case, sentencing them to seven years' imprisonment for illegal mining activities. According to an official notification issued by the Karnataka Assembly Secretariat, Reddy’s disqualification is effective from May 6, 2025 — the date of his conviction. The action is in accordance with Article 191(1)(e) of the Constitution of India, read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The disqualification will remain in effect for a further period of six years from the date of his release, unless the conviction is stayed by a competent court.
