Union Government has said that a delegation 15 foreign envoys is visiting Jammu and Kashmir yesterday. The visit has been organized by the government on the request of these envoys. Ministry of External Affairs Spokesman Raveesh Kumar said, objective of the visit was for the Envoys to obtain first-hand information on the impact of series of steps taken by the local administration to normalize the situation in recent weeks.

The envoys from 15 nations began a two-day government-facilitated trip to Jammu and Kashmir today. The group comprised envoys from USA, South Korea, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Fiji, Maldives, Norway, Philippines, Morocco, Argentina, Peru, Niger, Nigeria, Guyana and Togo. 

The Spokesman said, the group had meetings with security officials to understand the challenges of maintain security, including threat of terrorism in the union territory. Mr Kumar said, it was followed by an interaction with civil society from all walks of life and from all over Jammu and Kashmir. The group also interacted with the local media as well as a group of political



leaders.

The Spokesman said, the European Union Ambassador wanted the delegation to be broad-based but the government wanted a group size which is manageable. He said, the visit has been organized at a short notice. Kumar said the government would look at the possibility of taking more envoys to Jammu and Kashmir. 

Kumar said the programme for the trip was drawn keeping in mind the threat posed by terrorism and taking adequate precautions for security. He said, the visit was organized following requests from some envoys based in Delhi. The envoys visited Srinagar on today and they will be in Jammu on tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Congress yesterday criticized the government for allowing foreign envoys to visit Jammu and Kashmir, but not opposition party leaders. 

Talking to reporters in New Delhi, party leader Jairam Ramesh accused the Centre of  adopting double standards over the issue. He demanded that the government allowed unfettered access to Jammu and Kashmir to all the politicians.
