Yojna Patel, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, on Tuesday termed attempts to target commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz as “deplorable.”
Speaking at the United Nations Security Council on the Situation in the Middle East, Patel highlighted that the Strait of Hormuz is of critical importance to India’s energy and economic security.
She stressed that commercial shipping must not be targeted in military
conflicts and noted with concern the loss of Indian seafarers’ lives during the ongoing tensions.
Patel underlined that international law prohibiting attacks on commercial shipping must be respected. She said that targeting civilian vessels, endangering crew members, or impeding freedom of navigation in the Strait is unacceptable.
She also referred to India’s co-sponsorship of UNSC Resolution 2817 and called for the early restoration of safe and unimpeded maritime trade.
