New Delhi: Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Thursday alleged that certain old-world media houses have been running a systematic smear campaign against India, unable to digest the global rise of India and its turning into an economic powerhouse. In a tweet, Mr Thakur accused New York Times of writing fact-free and fabricated anti-India stories, and misusing the podium of UNESCO to distort facts.

The Minister said AG Sulzberger from New York Times mentioned the so-called raids on newsrooms. He said that in India, the law takes

its own course if someone does something wrong, newsroom or no newsroom. He added that merely claiming the status of the newsroom does not grant immunity from unlawful deeds.

He wondered how any investigation, no matter the evidence, amounts to an attack on the press. He asked if it is prudent to be a loose mouth and say journalists in India are treated as terrorists.

Mr Thakur said, it is difficult to differentiate whether it is New York Times or New Distort Times.
