A sudden burst of flood from Jurala to Srisailam between 3 pm and 6 pm on Thursday considerably increased water level at the Srisailam reservoir under the impact of heavy flow in river Krishna from projects in Karnataka.
Officials at the Srisailam dam site expected the storage at the reservoir to go up by five to eight tmcft by Friday evening if the flows continued at the same level. The inflows from Jurala went up from 73,000 cusecs at 3 pm to 1.35 lakh cusecs at 6 pm, taking the storage to 50 tmcft as against the capacity of 216 tmc ft.
The water level was 830 ft as against the full reservoir level (FRL) of 885 ft. The State government which was allowed to draw seven tmcft from Srisailam for drinking water needs in Prakasam and Guntur districts through the right bank canal discharged 12,713 cusecs into Nagarjunasagar after power generation.
