New Delhi: The Centre has clarified that it is committed to releasing funds for wage and material payments for proper implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, MGNREGA. Issuing clarifications on the issue of budget cut on MGNREGA in the Union Budget-2023-24, the Rural Development Ministry has said that whenever, the additional fund is required for the scheme, the Ministry of Finance is requested to provide the funds.

The

Ministry added that it reflects that actual releases to the States have been much higher than that provided at the Budget Estimate level. It further stated that even during the current financial year 2022-23, the Budget Estimate was 73 thousand crore rupees, which has been revised to over 89 thousand crore rupees.

The Ministry said that thus the previous release has no bearing on the requirement for funds for next year.
