The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has amended its packaging regulations for paan masala.
Under the new rules, paan masala can be sold only in plastic-free paper, paperboard, cellulose, tin or glass containers.
FSSAI has imposed a complete ban on the
use of plastic, plastic lamination and aluminium foil in paan masala packaging, citing public health and environmental concerns.
The move is aimed at reducing the risk of chemical reactions and microplastic contamination associated with storing paan masala in plastic pouches, thereby helping protect public health.
