Four-Storey Building Collapses in Delhi's Sabzi Mandi Area; 2 Killed, Several Feared Trapped

New Delhi: Several people are feared trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in the Sabzi Mandi area here. Two teenagers were killed after a four-story building collapsed in north Delhi's Sabzi Mandi area on Monday, a Times of India report said quoting officials. Police said a 72-year-old man, who was also trapped under the debris, was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

As per the reports, the mishap took place at around 11:50 AM. Eight fire tenders have been rushed to the incident spot, situated opposite Robin Cinema near Malka Ganj in the national capital.

"No fatality has been reported so far. Rescue operation is underway. Two persons have been rescued. Rest updates are awaited," Delhi's Chief Fire Officer Atul Garg told media.

Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asserted that he is monitoring the situation. "The building collapse incident in Sabzi Mandi area is extremely sad. The administration is engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am monitoring the situation", Kejriwal said.

While it is yet to be ascertained what exactly caused the building collapse, officials are of the view that heavy rainfall for the last few days in the capital city could have weakened the structure of the building.

Delhi and its adjoining areas have been witnessing a downpour for the last few days, due to which several areas were reported waterlogged.

According to the IMD data, in the last 24 hours, the capital has received 41.1 mm rainfall, while on Saturday the city has recorded 94.7 mm rainfall.
