At least five people were killed after an SUV, Mahindra Scorpio skidded off the road and plunged into the Chenab River in the remote Dachhan area of Jammu and Kashmir's eastern Kishtwar district on Saturday, officials said.

The fatal accident occurred at Yainwan in Dangdaroo around 10:45 am when the Scorpio, bearing registration number HR29AG-0648, travelling from Dangdaroo towards Sounder, skidded off the road and fell into the gushing Chenab.

Preliminary reports suggest that the vehicle lost control, veered off the road and rolled down a steep slope before falling into the river. Soon after the incident, police personnel from Dachhan Police Station, assisted by local

residents and rescue teams, rushed to the spot and launched an extensive rescue and recovery operation.

The difficult terrain and the vehicle's plunge into the Chenab River posed significant challenges for rescuers as efforts were made to trace and recover those travelling in the vehicle.

Officials said five bodies had been recovered from the accident site till the filing of this report. However, the exact number of occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident was yet to be confirmed, raising concerns that more people may have been travelling in the ill-fated vehicle. Authorities are working to establish the identities of the deceased and notify their families.
