Allahabad: Female protesters attempting to block the cavalcade of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah were manhandled by male cops, as seen in the video doing rounds on social media.

The incident occurred on Friday when Shah was scheduled to address a rally in the city. Two girl students along with their one male colleague raised placard against the BJP chief and shouted, "Amit Shah, go back". When the girls refrained from giving way to the cavalcade, a bunch of security personnel manhandled and detained them.

The video shared below shows one policeman grabbing one of the girls by her arms, pulling her hair and dragging her inside the security vehicle. Another girl, dressed in white, was hit by a stick by one of the commandos.

The video has created

outrage on social media, with questions being raised against the conduct of Uttar Pradesh police. While the government is yet to issue a statement, the Opposition has demanded punitive action against the police officials who used violence against the protesting girls.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson and MLC Sunil Singh said the government should explain why a female unit of police officials was not part of the convoy to deal with such a situation. Singh pointed that it is against the law for a male cop to manhandle female protesters.

UP Congress Spokesperson Anshu Awasthi said the government should apologise to the girls and ensure that the scope of dissent is not eliminated from the state. Immediate actions should be taken against the police officials identified in the video, he demanded.
