A woman was killed and more than 20 persons were injured when a bus overturned on a highway in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district on Monday, police said. 

The accident took place in the early hours when the private bus was heading from the state capital Raipur to Sukma, a police official said. According to preliminary information, more than 35 passengers were travelling in the bus. 

The vehicle went out of control and overturned after the driver apparently dozed off, he said.

Most passengers were asleep when



the accident occurred on National Highway-30 in the Bastar police station limits, the official said. 

A woman, identified as Padmani Chandravanshi, a resident of Kawardha, died on the spot. She was posted as a teacher in the Dornapal area of Sukma district, the police said. 

More than 20 passengers were reported to be injured in the incident. Locals and police personnel rescued passengers trapped inside the overturned bus, the official said. The injured persons were rushed to nearby hospitals where they were undergoing treatment.
