Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday indicated that he is likely to retain the finance department with himself, even as the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) prepares to approach the BJP leadership seeking its return.
The issue has emerged as a fresh point of discussion within the ruling Mahayuti alliance ahead of the monsoon session of the state legislature scheduled to begin on June 22.
The NCP is keen on reclaiming the finance portfolio, which was
originally allocated to it under the power-sharing arrangement when the BJP-led Mahayuti government was formed in December 2024.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had previously held the finance portfolio.
However, following his death in January 2026, Mr Fadnavis took over the department, citing administrative concerns, including the advanced stage of budget preparation and inter-departmental coordination at the time when Sunetra Pawar was not in position to present the budget.
