India reiterated that its intention is not to escalate the situation with Pakistan, but if there are military attacks, it will be met with a very firm response. This was stated by  External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar while co-chairing the India-Iran 20th Joint Commission Meeting along with his Iranian counterpart Dr. Seyed Abbas Araghchi in New Delhi. He said, Pahalgam attack compelled India to respond by striking at cross-border terrorist infrastructure and the response was targeted and measured.

The Minister said, Mr Araghchi is visiting India

at a time when it is responding to a barbaric terrorist attack and as a neighbour and close partner, it is important that Tehran have a good understanding of this situation.

Dr Jaishankar said, in recent years, India-Iran cooperation has progressed in many aspects. He added that this is the 75th anniversary of India-Iran diplomatic ties.

This is Dr. Araghchi’s first visit to India since assuming office as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran in August 2024.
