A two-wheeler-rider was assaulted by DMK cadre during a road blockade in Tirunelveli on Tuesday as the party staged statewide protests against the arrest of Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin.

In Tirunelveli, DMK cadre, led by Palayamkottai DMK MLA Abdul Wahab, blocked the Tirunelveli-Madurai Road at the Chellapandiyan statue junction in Vannarapettai by lying across the road. The protest, held around noon, brought traffic to a standstill at the busy junction, causing long tailbacks and considerable inconvenience to commuters.

With only a narrow gap left along the roadside, two-wheeler-riders

crossed the blockade one at a time. Despite repeated warnings from the protesters not to do that, a few attempted to cross.

The enraged protesters assaulted a two-wheeler-rider who tried to pass through the gap and pushed down his vehicle. When the rider questioned whether the protest should be allowed to inconvenience the public in such a manner, he was assaulted again.

On receiving information about the attack, Tirunelveli city deputy commissioner of police Saravanan rushed to the spot. Additional police personnel were deployed to prevent any escalation, and the two-wheeler-rider was escorted to safety.
